Today is Memorial Day; a day to honor those who passed to preserve our country’s freedoms. While this is something we should do every day, I don’t see any issue with having this time set aside to show respect for our fallen fighters: to include military, fire-fighters, police officers, or any other public servent involved in the defense or preservation of our country (9-11, etc).
That being said, to defend or preserve there must be some sort of attack; some sort of threat on what America stands for, such as the dictatorship and mass genocide that led to our involvement in World War II. All those who were drafted to fight in WWII, who bravely marched towards a clearly defined threat and common enemy, are truly heros. They were given no choice but to fight, to leave their lives for the sake of others, and they did so without question (…unless they fled the country).
Unfortunately, that isn’t the case in our current war. What may have started as an attempt to alleviate terrorism and instill a sense of nationalism and safety in our people, has become a drawn-out, debt-building, endeavor with losses on all sides (sides isn’t really appropriate, as many of the people who die due to our war in the Middle East are civilians and take no side).
My prayers go out to all the militia who have fallen, and the families who have lost, in this War on Terrorism; loss is difficult no matter the means. However, these are people who willingly signed up to fight in this war; they died doing what they were paid to do, they chose to fight; does that make them all heroes? I have no answer to that question, only an opinion…
A hero can be many things, but it isn’t made by getting paid to put your life on the line.
“I stopped at a market to get a fruit platter for a movie night with friends but I couldn’t find one so I asked the produce guy,” says the 40-year-old arts administrator from Seattle. “And he was like, ‘If you want fruit platters, go to Safeway. We’re organic.’ I finally bought a…
Oh god… This hurts so much. No. Organic food does not turn people into jerks. There is no causal relationship between the two. I hate it when “studies” do this. THERE IS NO PROOF OF CAUSE AND EFFECT. They’re correlated, which means, yes, they do have a relationship, but no, one doesn’t cause the other.
Guh
Well of course. Anyone older than twelve knows that even the strongest correlation does not automatically amount to causation — provided they are not a member of the popular news media.
I am a big fan of the local Whole Foods, and try my best to eat organic whenever I can. At the same time, I found the headline to be quite humorous. Maybe I am just a jerk.
…in which case, I blame the organic food.
